Joy Srinivasan, Chairperson & Managing Trustee at Makkala Jagriti, Bangalore. India. Bringing about social change became the driving force and purpose in my personal journey over the past 15 years. Prior to that I worked in several corporate organizations for over 13+ years. Thus, Makkala Jagriti was born in 2003 to facilitate transformation in educational development for marginalized and diverse groups in and around the community in order to build a sustainable and equitable society. Growing up in a conventional upbringing in a lower middle class family, I encountered social stigma and gender stereotypes. Experiencing access to education being denied and the strong inequality that surrounded me, enabled me to take strong life stances which lead me to forge a path of my own. I also was the first woman in my family to get educated, acquire professional skills, knowledge & competence, work in corporate, social and consulting roles in India and abroad. She has managed to build a sustainable and process driven organization in the social sector - Makkala Jagriti ( meaning awakening of the child ) - from its inception stage, by continuously building leadership skills in her team. Her life journey is one of being a transformational woman leader - challenging the status quo and making things possible, which till now had been assumed were not possible!!
